Hubb Lebowski (ハブ・リボウスキー , Habu Ribousukī) was a former police detective and the ex-husband of Cher Degré. He was still very much in love with Cher and sought to protect her, often, half-jokingly, asking if they still had a chance to get back together.

Appearance[]

Hubb was clean-shaven with short blonde hair and wore a grey suit over a dark blue collared shirt and black tie. He is described by Quent Yaiden as a "pretty boy" on several occasions due to his well-groomed look. After being imprisoned by Lady Jaguara, he gains a haggard look from which he never recovers.

Personality[]

Hubb was a devoted detective and took his work seriously, though he never let it get in the way of his personal life nor did he allow himself to be mentally restricted when trying to solve a case. As such, when he stumbled on the case of the wolves and Cher's missing Lunar Flower Maiden, he took into account every plausible, or implausible, lead that could give him answers.

Though they separated sometime before the series began, Hubb still loved Cher deeply and he was consistently driven by that to regain her affections. He was polite by nature and admitted that many of his decisions were influenced by others, including his parents, rather than having been made on his own. His love for Cher, perhaps, was the biggest motivation in his life and the only relationship he took credit for. During his search for her following Cheza's abduction, he gained courage and a strong sense of self and what was truly important to him. His strong resolve showed further when, even after Cher's death, he continued to travel with the wolves until he was physically unable to do so.

He also mentioned that he was allergic to canines and his sneezing usually hinted at the presence of a wolf nearby. However, he later developed a resistance to these allergies the longer he was exposed to the wolves.

Plot[]

Anime[]

When Quent Yaiden shot and injured Kiba in Freeze City, he was detained by the police and questioned by Hubb, at which point Quent asserted that the animal he shot was no mere dog, but a wolf. Following this incident, Hubb began to obsess over the matter and questioned Cher on the issue. She gave him a copy of the banned Book of the Moon which, effectively, started his journey on the path toward Paradise.

He pursued Cher as she tracked Cheza with an army employed by Lord Orkham and eventually teamed up with Quent as he searched in tandem for the pack of wolves and his wolf-dog, Blue, who was accompanying them. When he is reunited with Cher in Lady Jaguara's City, he refuses to leave her side and infiltrates Jaguara's keep with Cher to find Cheza. However, he is recaptured and tortured, the experience of which leaves him debilitated and in a persisting state of weariness. He and Cher manage to escape Jaguara's fortress as the city falls to ruin in the wake of battle between her soldiers and Lord Orkham's.

They find an army vehicle, the occupants of which lie dead near it from an apparent feud over money, and pick up Quent and Blue as they travel through the wastes. Later, they intercept the wolves and Cheza and all travel together until the rough terrain causes the vehicle to crash. Hubb carries Cheza out of the wreckage, but watches in horror as the vehicle then crashes into a chasm below with Cher still inside. He manages to reach Cher and tearfully holds her as she dies, lamenting that they didn't spend more time together, get a house, or have children. As she draws her last breath, Hubb cries hysterically over her body. Then, looking even more haggard, he gently drops her body into the icy waters nearby and watches her sink into the depths.

OVA[]

In the first episode of the OVA, Hubb witnessed Cher's death and 'buried' her in frigid waters. Despite his tragic loss, he continues forward with the wolves until they begin to climb the mountain the entrance to Paradise is contained within. He begins to lose his grip as he climbs and, despite Kiba's attempt to save him, he acknowledges that Paradise was not meant for him and allows himself to fall to his death. Tsume reaches out for him, but pulls back when he realizes Hubb has accepted his fate. Hubb is mortally wounded at the base of the mountain and, before he dies, removes a cigar from his coat that he'd found earlier. He puts it to his mouth, savoring the taste, and reaches for a scarf Cher used to wear that he'd kept with him. He inhales the scent on the scarf before he dies. He is not seen in Paradise. It is unknown what becomes of him after the world is reborn.

Relationships[]

Cher Degré[]

Before the events of the main series, they were happily married. However, they later divorced due to Cher's increased dedication to her work. Despite this, they still cared for each other.

Quent Yaiden[]

When they first met each other, Hubb regarded Quent as a rambling drunk while Quent thought of Hubb as a 'pretty boy' with little integrity. After seeing evidence of the existence of wolves, furthered by Cher's own research, Hubb began to view Quent more like a partner. They became travel companions, walking down the same path though they had different goals.
