The Lunar Flower (月の花 , Tsuki no Hana) is a fabled species of flower that is said to be a guiding light for those seeking Paradise. Once growing all over the world, these flowers became the main target by nobles and was harvested, to extinction, for scientific purposes.

Appearance[]

The Lunar Flower has thin white petals which appear to glow during the night. The outer petals turn a dark-pink color when fully bloomed while the inner ones remain white and full. A large stamen protrudes from the center of the flower; a fuzzy yellow stem with thin white filaments at the very end. The stem and leaves of the flower are emerald green.

Naming[]

The name "Lunar Flower" derives from it's bright-white petals; similar to the color of the moon, and the fact that the flower booms only at night; most brilliantly if the moon is full.

Usage[]

Apart from being admired for its beauty, the flower is used primarily for two things: it serves as a guide to Paradise, both in a visual sense as well as olfactorily (through smell), and it can be implemented as an ingredient. In the series, scientists harness its essence to create the Flower Maiden in order to solve the mystery surrounding opening the door to Paradise.

History[]

Referenced in the Book of the Moon, the Lunar Flower served as a tangible connection between the physical world and Paradise; a constant reminder of something better, something that mankind and wolves had sensed and yearned for eons. Said to be the key to finding and opening Paradise, its existence drove the instinctual calling present in man and wolves alike. The nobles who became obsessed with Paradise and the wolves who are naturally drawn to it understand the flower's significance.

As such, the nobles attempted to create their own key, known as Flower Maidens (花の娘 , hana no musume), using experimental scientific techniques and alchemy. The resulting Hanabitos were impure and lacked the ability to fulfill their intended purpose. They were subsequently destroyed, or abandoned. Only when Cheza was created was there any kind of clarified result, but by then the Lunar Flowers had been harvested to near extinction and the end of the world was nigh.

Plot[]

Cheza was the first Flower Maiden created who showed signs of promise in the goals of the scientists and nobles. As the physical sum of some of the last Lunar Flowers, her scent was pure and concentrated, drawing Kiba to Freeze City and, subconsciously, the rest of his pack. Much like a flower, Cheza nourished herself with light and water, though she was very much human in all other respects.

At the end of the anime, as Cheza clutches Kiba before her death, Lunar Flowers bloom around her remains which are little else but flower seeds.

Trivia[]

  • The Lunar Flower is based on the Queen of the Night, a type of Nightblooming Cereus, which blooms only at night and wilts at dawn. Blossoms are rare and fleeting with a strong scent, similar to Lunar Flowers.
  • It is mentioned by Gramps in episode 5 that lunar flowers once bloomed all over the town, but went extinct because of the nobles.
