Quent Yaiden (クエント・ヤイデン , Kuento Yaiden), sometimes referred to as "Pops", was the ex-sheriff of the town of Kyrios. His hometown was destroyed, seemingly by wolves. His wife and son, Ruus, died in the subsequent blaze. This tragedy drove his intense hatred for wolves to the point of obsessively hunting and killing any he could find with his ever-present rifle. Aside from his dog, Blue, who helped him track wolves, the only solace he found was in a bottle of booze. However, this left him in a near-constant state of inebriation which left him in trouble more often than not. Largely considered a secondary antagonist of Wolf's Rain, Quent is in fact more of an anti-hero since his motives are driven by tragic misunderstanding rather than malicious intent.

Appearance[]

Due to his focus on hunting wolves and drowning his sorrows in alcohol, Quent's outward appearance is dark and rough around the edges. He has a sharp, square jaw line covered in stubble as scruffy as his personality. His eyes, beady and worn from strain, peer out from under a dark fedora. He wears a long, khaki-colored trench coat over a black uniform with a high collar and brass buttons. Adding to his Western look, he sports thick, leather boots with cowboy-like spur frames. He keeps his hands warm in the cold with charcoal-black gloves and keeps his hunting rifle strapped beneath his coat.

Personality[]

Quent's demeanor is as rough as his appearance; his temper is short and he has little time for pointless conversation. His fixation on revenge and his cynical disposition have tarnished the family-man persona from his earlier, happier years. He is quick to anger, either as a result of his years in the wastes or from constantly drinking, and is exceptionally stubborn. However, his soft side usually emerges when he interacts with his dog, Blue.

Later in the series, his anger and frustration begin to wane and he becomes more sober, both literally and emotionally. He begins to see things more clearly and embraces his sorrows as reality while cherishing the memories of his past, using them to strengthen his resolve.

Background[]

Quent lived in the peaceful town Kyrios where he was sheriff, residing in a cabin with his wife and young son, Ruus. One day, Ruus came home with a black puppy that he found alone. At first, Quent refused to allow his son to keep the mutt, but he quickly relented and named the new family pet Blue. Unbeknownst to the family (and to Blue herself), Blue was actually half wolf.

Some short time afterwards, Kyrios was attacked and set on fire. Quent barely managed to survive the blaze, escaping with his rifle and Blue. However, Quent's wife and son perished despite attempts to save them. As he gazed in horror on the burning town, Quent and Blue witnessed wolves feasting on the burned corpses. One wolf in particular with heterochromia iridum, featuring one golden eye, glowered at him menacingly. Believing that the wolves were responsible for the destruction of his town, an enraged Quent fired his rifle, killing a few of them in the process. Quent vowed to henceforth hunt down every last wolf he could find to prevent what happened to him from repeating. In the years following, he traveled with Blue who skilfully helped him track down any wolf in the area.

In the OVA, Quent's primary goal was to hunt down the golden-eyed wolf which he believed to be the sole cause of Kyrios' destruction.

Plot[]

Anime[]

Quent is first seen sitting at a bar drinking and ranting to the bartender about the devilish nature of wolves. Soon after, he and Blue come upon Toboe alone in Freeze City. At first, Quent is fooled by Toboe's human illusion until he realizes his true form as a wolf. He raises his rifle to shoot Toboe until Tsume knocks the gun free, scratching Quent's hand in the process, allowing the wolves to escape. After this encounter, Quent continues to track Toboe and the rest of the pack throughout the series.

Even after Blue discovers that she is part wolf and runs away, Quent goes on without her for several episodes. He meets her again in Jaguara's city while she is in human form. There, she reveals the truth to him - that the ruin of his home and his life was not caused by wolves, but by Jaguara's soldiers searching for wolves. He stubbornly refuses to believe her, mostly because he doesn't recognize her. It's only when she tearfully calls him 'Pops' that he realizes who she is and embraces her in her wolf form. Despite this reunion, Blue tells him that she is no longer his dog since she's discovered her wolf calling.

OVA[]

Quent and Blue are able to leave Jaguara's city following its destruction, but he is injured while saving Blue from being hit by a car. Eventually, they are picked up by Hubb and Cher in a military vehicle. When their group meets up with Kiba's pack, Blue is happily reunited with Hige, but Quent's innate dislike for wolves runs deep and he refuses to join them. He goes off on his own but is followed by Toboe. Shortly after, Quent is confronted by Darcia. Toboe is instinctively defensive and Quent picks up on Darcia's maliciousness, raising his rifle and firing it in defense. However, he does so just as Toboe leaps at Darcia and the bullet hits him instead. Horrified, Quent goes to Toboe and can only cradle the young wolf as Darcia aims his own gun and fires.

As they both lie dying, Quent pets Toboe. When Blue arrives, he acknowledges her as his dog before he dies.

Relationships[]

Family[]

The only known relatives of Quent, were his unnamed wife and his son, Ruus. He loved and cared for them deeply.

Blue[]

Quent was Blue's owner. He raised her from when she was a puppy after Ruus brought her home. Though Quent was always rather stoic and rough at times with her, Quent did sincerely love her. He was dismayed when Blue ran away from him. When she became injured, he was distraught and horrified before nursing her back to health. When Blue stepped between him and Kiba, Quent refused to force her out of the way or shoot her to get at the white wolf. Even when he was momentarily fooled by Blue's human-guise, when he realized her true identity, Quent rushed to her in a tearful embrace.

Toboe[]

Toboe is drawn to Quent, possibly due to his natural affection for humans and because he sees a needful soul in Quent, therefore desiring to protect him. Before Quent's death, he recognizes Toboe as the wolf who saved his life after the destruction of Darcia's Keep and thanks him, even going so far as to let him lie on his arm and petting him gently as he would a dog.

Other[]

Quent's interactions with other humans, such as Hubb or Cher, are made with emotional indifference or disregard. While he is cordial in his own way to those who are kind to him, he reserves no particular love for those outside of his family circle. His meet with Darcia, while brief, is monumental since it serves as a connection between his past and his end; Darcia being the heterochromatic he saw at Kyrios. Obviously, he regards Darcia with nothing but hatred.

Quotes[]

  • “The thing about fairy tales is… there’s always some truth in ’em.”
  • “Always helps to have a friend around when you’re crossing the mountains. You never know what you’ll run into. Like bears – or wolves.”
  • “I might as well say it: instead of looking for wolves, you should probably start suspecting humans.”

Trivia[]

  • He acknowledges that while he feels wolves are monsters, humans can be no better.
  • Quent's birth date is November 28th, 5843.[1]
    • This also makes Quent the only character to have their birth date shown. No other characters' birth dates are shown or mentioned through out the entirety of the anime or manga.
